Simple Inexpensive Generator
You can build a generator to charge your batteries with a bicycle (multi-speed works best) and an alternator from any automobile. Build a simple stand that will hold the back tire off the ground and be stable when you sit on and pedal bike. Remove back tire and replace with a fan belt around wheel and run to a mounted alternator. Run the battery leads to your battery. When you need a charge, get on bike and pedal. You will not have to pedal too fast as a typical alternator only has to turn 1320 RPM to put out it's full potential and the difference in the size of the wheel as related to the alternator pulley will gear it so that the alternator will turn about 6 to 8 times faster than the wheel. Yup, you'll get a work out, but it works in a pinch. No noise, no gas (except beans to feed the peddler), and you build muscle in your legs.
You can hook up any gas motor (lawn mower, etc) to turn the alternator if you wish. You will need to know about your alternator. Peddling with a bicycle, a regulator isn’t necessary, but with a gas motor you could overcharge your battery. Some alternators have a voltage regulator built in and others require an external regulator. With a little ingenuity you can build a generator with anything that will turn an alternator. Your imagination is your only limiting factor.

Re: Simple Inexpensive Generator
Thanks for this post.
I have a couple old bicycles but just need to obtain an alternator. I could always use more ways to get some electricity.
I also have a couple hand cranked radios and flashlights, a small gas generator which I don't use much since I have used solar panels for the last 4 years.
But If necessary then someday I plan to even go without electricity and use candles and other "primitive" lighting.

Im gonna have to look into that. Ive been wanting to get into creating my own power source.
